Section Title:
Thin Film Materials
Section Info:
Thin solid films bonded to relatively thick substrates are ubiquitous in current materials technologies: microelectronic devices, thermal barrier coatings in gas turbine engines, mems devices, flexible electronics, and biomedical instruments for example. Of principal concern in this course is quantitative understanding of the consequences of mechanical stress in film-substrate structures, arising from either fabrication methods or service conditions. Examples include substrate curvature, film delamination, film fracture, dislocation formation, plastic flow and stress-driven evolution of surface morphology. Each topic will be developed within a self-contained framework, with a view toward achieving a general understanding of the underlying issues.
