Of principal concern in this course is quantitative understanding of the consequences of mechanical stress in film-substrate structures, arising from either fabrication methods or service conditions. Examples include substrate curvature, film delamination, film fracture, dislocation formation, plastic flow and stress-driven evolution of surface morphology. Each topic will be developed within a self-contained framework, with a view toward achieving a general understanding of the underlying issues.
