Section Title:
Books Matter/Book Matters
Section Info:
Topic: Books Matter/Book Matters This course interrogates the Book, asking what a book is and has been across time. Beginning with an examination of early manuscript and printed books in the Rare Books and Manuscripts Library of the University Library (Gutenberg Bible, Luther?s sermons, 16th century travelogue, Shakespeare first folio), we will examine the physical body of the book. Then we turn to books that address issues of the importance of texts and narration. These books treat the meaning of books and the great lengths people go to steal books, preserve them, destroy them. These texts portray reading books as profoundly dangerous and incendiary activities. The course then shifts to a cluster of books treating the idea of narration and identity. The focus here concerns books that experiment with innovative narrative techniques. The course concludes with a focus on Google Books, Project Gutenberg, and a series of current essays on digital and ebooks. First Year Discovery Program Course. Registration restricted to freshman. Students should enroll in only one Discovery course. Here is Professor Wade's website: http://www.germanic.illinois.edu/people/mwade
Restriction(s):
Restricted to First Time Freshman students.
