Section Title:
Educating Today's Children
Section Info:
First Year Discovery Program Course. Students should enroll in only one Discovery course. This course consists of conversations about education in the year 2015 and beyond. Students will explore the dynamics of teaching and learning as they relate to the educational practices employed in schools, with an emphasis on the changes needed to educate future generations of students. For example, the topic of motivating today's students will be considered in one session. Readings in a contemporary education or educational psychology text will serve as the background for discussion. We'll explore the dimensions of difference among today's student population in terms of ability, socioeconomics, race, family structure, and social-emotional status. Freshmen will have the opportunity to visit and participate in some school-based experiences as well. Two class sessions will be held on-site at a diverse local middle school.
Restriction(s):
Restricted to students with Freshman class standing.
