READINGS IN KANBUN. This course will introduce advanced readers of Japanese to kanbun, the variant form of classical Chinese in use among Japan's educated elite for over a millennium. Students will gain familiarity with the core grammar and vocabulary of classical Chinese, as well the syntactical and lexical eccentricities unique to kanbun, and will master the system of annotations used to indicate the Japanese reading of kanbun texts. Japan's vast -- and vastly underappreciated -- corpus of kanbun literature spans a wide range of genres, and course readings will reflect this diversity, including selections from imperial poetry anthologies, private diaries, Zen philosophical tracts, official histories, and medical treatises.
