Various advanced topics; generally taken during the second year of graduate study. Typical topics include turbulence, hydrodynamic instability, process dynamics, interfacial phenomena, reactor design, cellular bioengineering, properties of matter at high pressure, and phase transitions.

May be repeated. Prerequisite: Consent of instructor.

This Biotransport course will explore conservation laws of mass, energy, and momentum to mathematically describe the cell and molecular biology, immunology, physiology and biomedical engineering systems. The transport of mass, energy and momentum play critical roles in the function of living systems at varied length (e.g., cells, tissues, and organs) and time scales. Transport phenomena are also central to the design and operation of devices for biological research, imaging, biochemical processes, and therapeutic interventions including drug delivery, gene therapy and tissue engineering. These skills will be helpful for solving innumerable problems of contemporary biology, medical science, and biotechnology.

This course introduces the concepts related to the fundamentals and practical methods for the preparation of nanostructured materials. Principles on nucleation and growth and related subjects of interfacial science, crystal structure and essential characterization techniques will be covered. The main emphasis of the course will be the approaches to non-hydrolytic synthesis of uniform and monodispersed nanoparticles in solution, i.e. the controls of size, shape, facet, and structure of nanomaterials and the production of nanoparticles.
