Examination of rural poverty and development issues in the United States, with particular attention to current anti-poverty policies and programs and alternative programs. Topics include measurement of poverty; causes of rural poverty; income maintenance, education, and employment policies and their consequences; and rural development strategies.

Prerequisite: ACE 100 or ECON 102 or consent of instructor.
