Credit: 3 hours Section Title: Habitat Restoration in Alabama Section Info: This course will focus on ecological restoration within Alabama's coastal habitats of which several are endangered. The course will meet on-line every Tuesday evening (except March 22, 2011) and culminate in a 5-7 day field study trip to coastal Alabama in May 2011 shortly after the semester's end. A $1500 fee will be charged for lodging, surface transportation, etc. Contact Dr. Endress for additional information: 217-244-1679 or aendress@illinois.edu. This section for undergraduate students for 3 credit hours. This is an interdisciplinary seminar in the environmental humanities, focusing especially on the fields of philosophy of ecology, environmental justice, literary ecocriticism, and environmental history. Assigned readings are drawn from representative texts and cover key theories and methods in these fields. Class discussions are supplemented by audiovisual materials, guest speakers, campus events, and web-based assignments. Students have the opportunity to gain a basic understanding of ecological criticism; to conduct research on a relevant topic or issue; and to develop their skills for use in educational, professional, and personal settings.
