Section Info:
Topic: Kings, Queens, and Courtiers: Art in 15th and 16th century France. This seminar will build on themes that will be woven through an exhibition, Kings, Queens, and Courtiers: Art in Early Renaissance France, Art Institute of Chicago February 27 to May 30, 2011. The art institute exhibition brings together painted altarpieces, tapestries, exquisite manuscripts for private devotion, monumental sculpture, precious goldsmith work, stained-glass windows, and portrait medals in the antique style all dating around 1500. We will consider these and related works over a longer period and in a broader context, examining patronage, narrative, tradition and innovation in the arts, and the impact of the courts of Burgundy and the Italian cities on the arts in France.
