Shirley Temple helped establish the 1930s star system; Judy Garland defined the 1940s "teenager." 1990s films such as Real Women Have Curves became cross-over hits, redefining both "independent" and "Hollywood." In 2000, Bring It On launched a franchise. Recently, surprise hits such as Juno and Precious have taken teenage pregnant girls to the Academy Awards and contributed to public debates about race, racism, sexuality, and teenage girls' autonomy. Many after school programs define "filmmaking" as "empowerment" for girls, and girls everywhere make films with their mobile phones and laptops.
