Topic: Making Art History, the Chinese Case. This course concerns itself with methodology and theory in the context of iinterpreting Chinese painting from the twelfth through seventeenth centuries. We shall consider a series of case studies, each of which is (or was in its time) controversial. An issue that will remain in the foreground of our discussions is whether art history is (or ever has been) "global."
