Topic: Fashion Design. This course will focus on the apparel design process from rough sketches to finished, full color illustrations of mini collections. There will be a brief overview of other aspects of fashion including basic construction concepts, properties of textiles, illustration, history, manufacturing, trend forecasting, merchandising, and social psychology of dress. Class time will consist of a combination of lectures, demonstrations, critiques, discussions, video presentations and design assignments. The assignments will include four portfolio quality plates (representations of mini collections), a work of wearable art, partnering in the construction of an outfit made from recycled garments, readings, in-class mini construction projects and participation in a fashion show . This course is meant to give a broad overview of the many diverse areas of study and employment available to someone with an interest in fashion. The primary objective however is to experience the fashion design process by developing micro collections - beginning with a concept, followed by research, design (sketching), and finally, finished illustrations for presentation and critique.

Topic: (re)Making Matter(s). This class examines the rise of DIY culture: the proliferation of post-consumer/green design strategies and self-determined making popularized by such publications as Make and ReadyMade magazines; the politics of radical crafting as a feminist and punk inspired opposition to globalized industrial production; and the ever popular trope of the artist as bricoleur, making creative and resourceful (re)use of whatever materials are available, regardless of their original purpose. The format of this class will be a combination of lectures and class discussions on a wide array of issues specific to contemporary practitioners in the fields of indie-crafts, fashion, design, architecture and art. Material gathering fieldtrips and resource guide development will lead to the production of three projects that incorporate the use of re-claimed or re-purposed materials with the goal being the redemptive redeployment of scavenged, surplus material and obsolete objects. This class is open to non-majors, and is intended to encourage material making at all skill levels.
