Optimization in Theory and Practice. Optimization is fundamental in many fields, even when it is not obvious. For example, Netflix and Amazon optimize selections for individual customers, financial planners optimize return vs. risk. In this course the principles of mathematical optimization theory will be introduced and applied to problems in engineering, business, and other fields. Students will be able to research and numerically model a problem of their choice. Prerequisite: Math 220 or MATH 221 or equivalent http://www.ae.illinois.edu/people/faculty/conway.html. First year Discovery Program Course. Registration restricted to freshmen. Students should enroll in only one Discovery course.
