Disney Scores! Music in Disney's Animated Musicals. Examines the changing role of music within Disney's animated films since the 1930s. Films covered range from the animated shorts and the first full-length features of the early sound era (Silly Symphonies, Snow White, Fantasia) to the rebirth of Disney’s animation division in the late 1980s and 1990s (The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Mulan, and The Lion King). The course will conclude with a survey of films from the Pixar era, including the Toy Story series, Finding Nemo, and WALL-E, as well as a consideration of the legacy of the traditional animated musical in Enchanted. Themes include music and technology; connections to other entertainment industries (songwriting and sound recording, Broadway musicals, television, video games, etc.); cine-musical, cultural, and generic conventions; and the encoding of gender, race, ethnicity, and class in musical scores. Dr. Gayle Sherwood Magee, Assistant Professor of Musicology. See http://www.music.uiuc.edu/facultyBio.php?id=177. First Year Discovery Program Course. Registration restricted to freshmen. Students should enroll in only one Discovery course.
