Disney Scores! Music in Disney's Animated Musicals. Examines the changing role of music within Disney's animated films since the 1930s. Films covered range from the animated shorts and the first full-length features of the early sound era (Silly Symphonies, Snow White, Fantasia) to the rebirth of Disney’s animation division in the late 1980s and 1990s (The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Mulan, and The Lion King). The course will conclude with a survey of films from the Pixar era, including the Toy Story series, Finding Nemo, and WALL-E, as well as a consideration of the legacy of the traditional animated musical in Enchanted. Themes include music and technology; connections to other entertainment industries (songwriting and sound recording, Broadway musicals, television, video games, etc.); cine-musical, cultural, and generic conventions; and the encoding of gender, race, ethnicity, and class in musical scores. Section Info:
Jazz, a product of African, European, Caribbean, and American cultures, was born in the 20th century and paralleled the cultural and social changes in this country throughout the century. By learning to identify some of the great jazz masters and the various styles of jazz, and you will begin to listen more deeply to all styles of music. The course includes a combination of live performances, films, recordings, lecture and discussion. Joan Hickey is a professional jazz pianist who performs around the Chicago area. Digital Audio Recording/Editing Techniques: Creative Reflections of Our Time and Society. This is an introductory class offering information and hands-on experience with digital audio recording/editing hardware and software as a creative medium for investigating relevant expressions and reflections of our time and society. Topics will include discussions about the diversity of life and society, how we express ourselves through art, as well as recording equipment, interconnections, compatibility, microphones, preferred microphone placements and methods with specific recording and sound processing techniques. Students will work directly with the technology through a series of assignments, experiments, and creative sound/music compositions realized during weekly lab times. The Musical Theatre Singer
Section Info:
A workshop course that explores the vocal technique, style and performance of solo vocal repertoire from American Musical Theater. Topics and demonstrations on healthy vocal techniques, auditioning, acting a song, as well as, effective song selection for auditions and recitals will be addressed. Additional insights on performance styles will be gained by weekly assignments. Class lectures will examine a brief survey of musical theater from operetta to current Broadway shows and how the vocal styles, techniques and songs have changed and evolved. The semester will culminate in a final class presentation, attending local musical theatre productions, and performance on the final class cabaret concert. Course is open to all non-music majors. Approximately 65 hours over 12-13 days of internship experience at KCPA will be required; class will most often be in the evening, and may last until 11pm.
