Examines diverse strains of cultural and intellectual life in the US from the early Republic through the 1890s. Emphasizes popular culture, religious revivalism, educational institutions, reform movements, art, science, and literature and the roles of cultural elites, women, working-classes, African Americans, Native Americans and immigrants in shaping national, regional and local cultures. Prerequisite: One year of college history or consent of instructor.

Same as RLST 478. 3 undergraduate hours. 2 or 4 graduate hours.
