Culture, society, and politics in Imperial Russia, focusing on power and resistance, the lives and culture of ordinary Russians, and competing ideas about the state, the individual, community, nation, religion, and morality.

3 undergraduate hours. 2 or 4 graduate hours. For higher credit, graduate students will be required to do more reading and to write an additional paper. Prerequisite: One year of college history or consent of instructor.
