Seminars introduce students to aspects of globalization through a case study of a particular location abroad. On campus, students explore historical and contemporary aspects of the location abroad to prepare for their field visit. Abroad, students engage with local resources and people to better understand how the local site contributes to and is impacted by relevant global processes under focus. Course activities will include a field site visit abroad, discussions, lectures, short essays, student presentation, and final projects. Shanghai, China: Ecology and Development This course focuses on learning about China’s development-related environmental changes on the one hand, and to experience in person the social impacts of these environmental changes on the other: how the changed air quality, urbanization, traffic jam, and other environmental issues impact the ways in which people interact with each other, design their daily routines, deal with emotional problems, view their government’s effectiveness, and so on. Globalization and Urban Inequalities in Post-apartheid Cape Town In this course students explore and map how global economic processes shape local inequalities in post-apartheid Cape Town, South Africa. We will read texts about the global history that produced Cape Town's segregated landscape before embarking on a 2 week walking tour of its rich, white gated urban enclaves, multiracial suburbs and poor, black peri-urban townships. Our tours will include visits to its famous wine plantation, beaches, mountains, Nelson Mandela's Robben Island prison cell and other sites of struggles against urban isolation and social inequalities. Section Info:
This service-learning course explores the question of the role of the nongovernmental organization (NGO) in development. On site in Managua, Nicaragua, the course explores how an NGO operates at the local level and challenges the student to reflect on how “development” occurs. Students will stay in groups of two with local families. Nicaragua is the second poorest country in Latin America, and it faces many social and economic challenges. What kinds of solutions have local and international NGOs found to overcome these challenges? Students are not required to have Spanish language training, although any background in foreign languages will improve the experience.Registration is restricted until students have been accepted into the program by the Study Abroad Office.
