TOPIC: A Unified Country? Perspectives on German Unification The Fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 was a major event both in German national history and on a global scale. In this course we will consider competing perspectives on this event and its aftermath and seek to understand the development of unified Germany as it approaches its 20th anniversary. To this end, we will read and analyze media reports, autobiographical accounts, TV and radio news clips, secret police documents, cartoons, statistics, scholarly works, documentary and feature films, and a novel. Through the wide range of texts and topics, this course will actively develop your language skills, as you will enlarge your vocabulary, review important grammar points, and advance your writing skills.
