Section Title:
Chinese Science, Tech & Med
Section Info:
TOPIC: Chinese Science, Technology, and Medicine This course introduces the history and human impact of Chinese science, technology, and medicine. Using a socio-cultural approach, we will examine social, cultural, and political contexts within which various forms of science and technology were practiced and understood across Chinese history. Course material draws from a broad range of sources, with a focus on biomedical sciences and technologies. Science, technology, and medicine have been sophisticated bodies of understanding and practice in China since the beginning of Chinese civilization. We will examine their emergence and development over the past several thousand years. We will also look at the replacement of traditional physical science by modern science in the 20th century, and at the survival of traditional medicine alongside biomedicine today. The course does not presuppose knowledge of China, the Chinese language, or the history of science. By taking this course, you will deepen your understanding of Chinese culture by learning about important strands of Chinese history that are often overlooked in other courses. You will achieve new insights into the ways in which cultural, social, and intellectual change shape science, technology, and medicine. We will frequently compare the Chinese experience with that of other cultures in order to show how you can gain these insights. Cross listed with ANTH 199.
