Section Title:
Fictions of Joseph Conrad
Section Info:
: A survey of the works of Joseph Conrad dating from the so-called 'major phase' of his literary career, including novels Lord Jim, Nostromo, The Secret Agent, and Under Western Eyes, the novellas 'Youth' and 'Heart of Darkness', the quasi-autobiographical 'A Personal Record', as well as a selection of letters and archival documents. Students will examine the many innovations of Conrad's fiction within the multiple contexts of his perceived role as a public intellectual in Britain, his past as a merchant mariner, his sense of exilic otherness in the UK, and his complex collaboration with contemporaries such as Ford Madox Ford, Henry James, and James Galsworthy, along the way helping establish a concrete portrait of the man (in all his plurality) and his times (in all their turbulence).
