THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK -- 4 HOURS CREDIT. "The Great American Songbook" is a term that encompasses thousands of songs by American songwriters who flourished in the period from about 1920 to 1960 (and sometimes beyond), including George and Ira Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, Harold Arlen, Johnny Mercer, Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, Jerome Kern, Dorothy Fields, Hoagy Carmichael, Duke Ellington, and Vernon Duke. The repertory forms a crossroads for performers from a wide array of musical idioms: jazz, opera, cabaret, art song, gospel, rock, country, and musical theater. The course will involve intensive analysis of music and lyrics of several dozen songs. Students will be required to participate in daily discussion of assigned songs, to write brief analyses, to make an oral presentation on contrasting recorded interpretations of a particular song, and, as the final project, to collaborate with another student in writing an original song within the conventions of the Songbook.
