INSTRUCTOR: Prof. Steven P. Hill ("S-HILL4@ILLINOIS.EDU"); 333-1246, 3137 FLB). TOPIC: CENTRAL AND EAST EUROPEAN NAMES IN ENGLISH This mini-course can be taken alone, or can be taken in addition to RUSS 199 (CRN 52382; 1 + 1 = 2 cred. hrs.). If students want 2 credit hours, they can enroll in both courses, but if they want 1 credit hour, they can enroll in one or the other course separately. ("Mix or match.") Similar to RUSS 199, this course attempts to to "demystify" the wide array of personal and geographic names and terms, which over the centuries have made their way into English, from Central and East European nations. (Approach is similar to Classics courses that examine and explain English words and phrases inherited from Latin and Greek.) Lectures and readings in English. No prior knowledge of foreign languages is necessary. Reading Packet (in English, appx. 12 pages/week). Should be ready either just before start of Spring Vacation, or just after we return from it. Precise details on price and where to buy it will be announced in class. Grades based on two 1-hour exams. TERM: just under 7 weeks (total 6 class meetings).
