Undergraduate Open Seminar - 52382 - RUSS 199 - SH2 INSTRUCTOR: Prof. Steven P. Hill ("S-HILL4@ILLINOIS.EDU"); 333-1246, 3137 FLB). TOPIC: HERITAGE OF RUSSIAN EAST EUROPEAN NAMES IN ENGLISH. Taught in English. No Prerequisites. TERM: 7 weeks (total 7 class meetings). Meeting Dates: March 15, 2010 through May 3, 2010. Add-deadline: Fri., Mar. 19. Drop-deadline: Fri., Apr. 16, 2010 This mini-course can be taken alone, or can be taken in addition to SLAV 199 CRN 50340 (1 + 1 = 2 cred. hrs.). If students want 2 credit hours, they can enroll in both courses, but if they want 1 credit hour, they can enroll in one or the other course separately. ("Mix or match.") TOPIC. We will attempt to "demystify" the wide array of people's names and nicknames, geographic names, literary characters' names, as well as abbreviations and technical terms, which over the centuries have made their way into English, from Russia and other East European nations. Our approach will be similar to Classics courses that examine and explain our English heritage of words and phrases that came down from Latin and Greek. PREREQUISITES. Lectures and readings in English. No prior knowledge of Russian or other foreign languages is necessary. READING PACKET (in English, appx. 12 pages/week). Should be ready either just before start of Spring Vacation, or just after we return from it. Precise details on price and where to buy it will be announced in class. GRADES based on two 1-hour exams.
