Topic: "The New Transcendentalists-From Motown, to Oprah, to Barack and Beyond" This course will (1) examine the social, political, economic, romantic and cultural impact of the Motown music phenomenon; and (2) review, assess and critically interrogate how Oprah Winfrey and Soledad O�Brien (television); Denzel Washington and Halle Berry (screen); Tiger Woods and Michael Jordan (sports); Barack Obama and Condoleezza Rice (government); Kanye West and Mariah Carey (music); and others have used public performances in their respective areas to transcend ethnoracial and other traditionally limiting boundaries, containments and impediments. First Year Discovery Program Course. Registration restricted to freshmen. Students should enroll in only one Discovery course. Students who enroll in more than one may be dropped from the additional Discovery courses.
