Discovery Class for Freshman. Topic: Community Development in Chicago: Race, Gender, and Difference. This discovery course will expose students to social, political, racial, and gender issues facing diverse neighborhoods in Chicago, along with community development efforts undertaken to improve life in these communities. Students are encouraged to form new understandings of diverse urban communities through readings, seminar discussions, a field trip to Chicago and dialogue with one another. Emphasizing the principles of community development practice, this course will introduce students to the powerful resources that lie within communities. By the end of the seminar, students will be able to identify themselves as both member of the University of Illinois community and citizens of a larger community, and students will recognize the powerful roles they can play in creating positive change within each of these spheres. The course examines the history of Chicago and its neighborhoods; reviews a variety of approaches to urban community development; explores issues of race, gender and immigration in Chicago neighborhoods; and investigates specific neighborhoods and how they have been influenced by community development efforts.
