Topic: Science & the Media By becoming science communicators themselves, students will explore the interconnections of scientific advances and public understanding. Assignments will be built around recent and historical media portrayals of science. For example, while novel H1N1 virus (swine flu) makes the news, we'll consider the choice of terms, characters and other storytelling methods. We will also examine the cholera epidemic in London in 1854. The combination of seminar/workshop will allow students to interview scientists and journalists, discuss work and become science communicators. Class will meet in a computer lab/seminar room. Students should expect reading, writing, on-campus field trips, interviews and creation of online projects. First Year Discovery Program Course. Registration restricted to freshmen. Students should enroll in only one Discovery course.
