Private Equity
Section Info:
Course restricted to declared Finance majors through Nov. 29. Any remaining seats will open to other Colege of Business students at approximately noon on Monday, Nov. 30. Private Equity, which includes both venture capital transactions and buyouts, has been on the rise during the last decade but has experienced significant turmoil in the last year. Understanding how private equity financing differs from public financing has become increasingly important not only for students who will actually work for entrepreneurial companies or in private equity firms but also for students who will go into investment banking, consulting or other professional fields that are frequently working with private equity transactions. This topics of this course include an overview of the private equity market, the risk and return of private equity investments, contractual structures, and the valuation of highly leveraged transactions. The course is a finance elective and requires prior basic knowledge about finance and proficiency in Excel. The class format is lectures and case discussions. This course can be taken on a stand-alone basis but is recommended to be taken in combination with FIN 490 VC.

Section Title:
Portfolio Management
Section Info:
Registration restricted to declared Finance majors through Nov. 29. Any remaining seats will open to other College of Business students at approximately noon on Monday, Nov. 30. COURSE DESCRIPTION: This is an experiential course focusing on investment analysis in the context of the investment management industry. The goal of this class is to give students working knowledge of the industry by drawing upon the experience of simulated investment presentations to portfolio managers (in the classroom setting). The course will help students generate superior investment ideas by conducting creative, value-added research. Students will act as equity analysts by working through the investment process: idea generation, analysis, and presentation, and should walk away with a working knowledge of the investment management industry. Student teams will pitch a series of both long and short ideas to both the Professor and the class. Because the simulation will mimic an actual presentation in a fund environment, the students will also learn the terminology associated with communication to portfolio managers and other investment peers. In short, the goal of the course is to leave you prepared for your job interviews in the investment management community."

Venture Capital
Section Info:
Registration restricted to declared finance majors through Nov. 29. Any remaining seats will open to other College of Business students at approximately noon on Monday, Nov. 30. This course focuses on the financing of entrepreneurial companies by venture capitalists. It is targeted to three groups of students: those who wish to start new ventures or join new and growing organizations, those who wish to work in private equity, venture capital or business development, and those who wish to learn new analysis tools which can be applied to a range of other corporate finance settings. Venture capital investments are very complex, which means that if you understand why and how these transactions are structured then you will be able to better understand other less complex financial transactions. The topics include an overview of VC industry, how entrepreneurs should evaluate VCs, VC due diligence, valuation techniques, and the structuring and negotiation of financial contracts. The course is a finance elective and requires prior basic knowledge about finance and proficiency in Excel. The class format is lectures and case discussions.
