Racial& Ethnic Identity Theory
Section Info:
In this graduate-level course, students will be introduced to and interrogate the interdisciplinary research on racial identity (i.e., the body of work designed to capture the personal meanings of the social construction of race and the ways in which individuals perceive themselves and others as racial beings). The central theories, qualitative and quantitative empirical research findings, and central debates in the field will be critically examined. The course will focus on the identities of groups that have been racialized in the United States (i.e., Asian American, Black, Latino, Native American, and "biracial") and the ways in which these identities interesect with gender, class, and sexuality.

The pro-seminar on the Cognitive Science of Teaching and Learning consists of three strands. The first strand is learning. Topics in this strand include metacognition, self-regulated learning, transfer of learning, representation of knowledge, learning to reason, development of expertise, life-span cognitive development, and the nature and conditions of classroom learning. The second strand is language. Topics include metalinguistic awareness, word recognition and reading, discourse comprehension, and second language acquisition. The third strand is social and cultural perspectives. Topics include social cultural dimensions of learning, learning in the context of deafness, and cross-cultural differences in teaching and learning. Each of the faculty in the CSTL division [Richard Anderson, Kiel Christianson, Jose Mestre, Michelle Perry, Jenny Singleton, Elizabeth Stine-Morrow, and David Zola] will make presentations. Students will be responsible for weekly readings from the current journal literature, several reflection papers during the semester, and a concrete research proposal to be submitted by the end of the semester. The pro-seminar is required of first-year graduate students in CSTL and recommended for advanced graduate students in CSTL. The seminar is open to other graduate students, with the consent of the instructor of record, Richard Anderson, who may be reached at csrrca@illinois.edu.

Students will be introduced to the theoretical and historical foundations of using eye-tracking in reading and language research. The majority of the course will consist of practical, hands-on training and practice using a state-of-the-art eye tracker in a laboratory setting. Skills to be developed include operating the eye tracker, developing appropriate experimental materials, programming experiments, collecting data, analyzing data, and interpreting results, all of which will be conducted in the instructor's lab. Note: This course will meet in 1424 Beckman Institute.
