Topic: Fashion Design. This course will focus on the apparel design process. There will be a brief overview of other aspects of fashion including basic construction & textiles, illustration, history, manufacturing, trend forecasting, merchandising, and social psychology of dress. Class time will consist of a combination of lectures, demonstrations, critiques, discussions, video presentations and design assignments. The assignments will include four portfolio quality plates, a work of wearable art, participation in the construction of an outfit made from recycled materials, readings and in class activities. This course is meant to give a broad overview of the many diverse areas of interest and employment available to someone with an interest in fashion. The primary objective however is to experience the fashion design process by developing collections - beginning with a concept, followed by research, design, illustration, and finally presentation.
