Topic: China into Film. This course is about how images of China are constructed through film. In short, how we think about China--its past and its present--has been largely shaped by cinema. We shall examine films made by Asian-American directors such as Wayne Wang (Joy Luck Club) and those made by veteran Hollywood directors such as Frank Capra (The Bitter Tea of General Yan). We shall also explore how Taiwanese and Mainland Chinese directors have constructed their own visions of "China." This course is intended for students who have had little or no background in Chinese art or history.
