Topic: Key Terms of Visual Culture. This course introduces key concepts for understanding the wide range of imagery that has come to characterize contemporary everyday life in the 21st century. Images are drawn from popular culture, fine arts, and vernacular arts. Contemporary digital imagery, such as music videos and television dramas, is considered alongside paintings and sculpture from the past. Drawn from the literature of Visual Culture Studies, the key concepts to be considered are: Power, ideology, representation, seduction, carnivalization, the gaze, intertextuality, and multimodality. The course will mix readings, discussion, and practical exercises involving photography (with no prior experience required).
