TOPIC: ALTERED STATES "Scenes involving madness and sleep/dreams have long proven attractive to opera librettists and composers and they invite a broad expressive range in performance as well. This seminar will consider some examples from the 17th and 18th Centuries before concentrating on the operas of Richard Wagner. From his first completed opera, Die Feen, through to Parsifal, Wagner explored altered states of consciousness in each of his dramas, stimulating admiration for his ability to anticipate such thinkers as Freud and Jung. Close score study and attention to the ways such scenes function as theatrical devices will be combined with readings, some of which will touch on the history of psychiatry and perspectives on the unconscious in order to fully grasp the nature of Wagner?s achievement."
