THE POWER OF MUSIC IN SOCIAL LIFE. Note: This section also meets with ANTH (Note: Dr. Turino holds an appointment in Anthropology.) Investigates the expressive, social, religious, and political functions of music in four diverse societies: Peru, Zimbabwe, India, and the United States. The course will be divided into four units each presenting the music and cultural context of a particular society as well as one or two particular themes. In addition to reading and writing assignments, students will be taught to perform music from the societies studied in units 2-4. The performance component of the course is meant to augment musical understanding through music making to complement the academic study of the musical and cultural traditions. Days one and two of each week will be dedicated to discussing the readings, listening in class, and audiovisual materials to introduce the diverse musical cultures. Day three of each week for units 2-4 will be dedicated to learning to perform the music studied. The instructor has in his possession the instruments necessary to teach the performance component of the course. First Year Discovery Program Course. Registration restricted to freshmen.
