Topic: What Contemporary Films Teach Us About Race. This freshman seminar will explore issues of race, ethnicity, culture and difference in an effort to teach students about how to be critical consumers of contemporary films. Exploring multiple genres of film from comedy, drama, and horror to family and race-specific films this course will focus on racial discourse. Students will be taught racial theories and asked to look for various discursive patterns, tendencies, and messages about racial identities. Besides learning a bit about film production students will examine how race, gender, and class privilege play a part in their interpretations as audience members. Students will watch and critique at least six films and the course will culminate with a final project that will involve a public discussion about film consumption.
