Section Info:
This is an introductory course to theoretical aspects of the structure of French, requiring at least some form of previous introduction to linguistic theory. The course focuses on four main areas of French linguistics: phonetics and phonology (the sound system), morphosyntax (the structure of sentences), lexicology (the internal structure of words and meaning relations between words), and pragmatics (discourse). During the course, students will gain an understanding of the key concepts and terminology needed to describe and analyze French, and they will become familiar with theoretical analyses that have been proposed for explaining the structure of French. They will also learn to identify and analyze structural patterns exemplified in French data and compare the structure of French to that of other languages (e.g., English). The course will consist of assigned readings, lectures and discussions, and analytical exercises.
