This course is an introduction to the major art historical, stylistic and thematic developments in Latin America of the late sixteenth through eighteenth centuries. Themes to be investigated include: the pictorial representations of race; indigenous artist workshops, traditions, and the birth of European art academies; the pictorial constructions of gender; as well as the translation of styles. The course includes field trips to local museums and libraries. Previous introductory level art history recommended, but not required. Graduate section.
