Section Title:
The World in Translation
Section Info:
This is an introductory course for the Undergraduate Certificate in Translation Studies and counts as an elective for the Certificate. It introduces students to a variety of world classics. Literary texts, art masterpieces, performances, and music illustrate the fundamental mechanisms of cultural transfer from ancient Greece to contemporary US. The students will get acquainted with translation processes, methods, and concepts as they describe and facilitate cultural exchanges between different media, between cultures, between different time periods and between languages. The students will have an opportunity to research various cultural contexts. They will learn how to do close reading of texts and how to appreciate art and performances. They will compare translations and methods underlying these translations, and they will make translations of their own.
