Section Info:
Topic: Vasari's Lives of the Most Eminent Painters, Sculptors and Architects. The seminar studies Giorgio Vasari's Lives of the Most Eminent Painters, Sculptors and Architects (1550, revised 1568), which is the first modern art history book as well as the foundation text for the study of Italian Renaissance art and architecture. The approach to the material is methodological: it explores the construction of this monumental text, its historical position, and its far-reaching applications in the field of art history. Because of the emphasis on historiography and methods in the seminar, students may focus their research on their particular fields of interest -- from ancient to contemporary.
