Section Info:
Haiti in Crisis: Critical Interpretations of Media and Literary Representations of Haitian History and Migration. Haiti is the second oldest republic in the Western hemisphere, with a history that has long been subject to external manipulation and economic exploitation. As a result, almost 10% of Haiti?s population lives outside the country, mainly in France, Canada, and the United States. This course will examine the impact of such events as the 1915 invasion and occupation of Haiti by the US, US support for the Duvalier dictatorships, the introduction of sweatshop labor and the overthrow of two duly elected Aristide governments on the representation of Haitians in literature. The media distortions of this history that have accompanied the recent devastating earthquake will be a crucial part of the course structure.
