Future Cities. Over the next 15 years a dramatic expansion of cities and urban areas worldwide will need to take place to accommodate a projected 1.5 billion additional urban residents. Those new residents will use 430 million gallons of gasoline, 300 billion tons of water, 750 million tons of food, and 8.6 billion megawatt-hours of electricity annually. They will also produce an estimated 640 million tons of waste annually. This course will examine important policy and planning issues surrounding the city of the future and the expansion of metropolitan development. Discovery Program Course. Registration restricted to freshmen. Students should enroll in only one Discovery course. Students who enroll in more than one Discovery course may be dropped from the additional Discovery Courses.
