Advanced study of a specific theme or problem in Russian literary and cultural studies, with some reading in Russian, and some discussion of critical theory.

3 undergraduate hours. Prerequisite: At least one course in Slavic Department at the 400 level or consent of instructor.

Section Info:
This course will read chiefly prose fiction, but also poetry, memoiristic literature and selected journalism issuing from Russia at war from earliest times to the recent conflicts in the Caucasus. It will also treat a selection of war films and offer exposure to other aspects of popular culture such as songs and propaganda posters. The course will be weighted toward treatment of the twentieth century, and in particular, the Russian Civil War period and World War II�the most mythologized and culturally significant conflicts for Russian and Soviet culture of the past century. Open to non-majors and students who do not read Russian.
