DISCOVERY COURSE -- 1ST EIGHT WEEKS OF THE SEMESTER -- 3 HOURS CREDIT MUSIC IN THE NEW HOLLYWOOD FILM In 1967, Bonnie and Clyde heralded a decade of innovative filmmaking generally described as the New Hollywood. New Hollywood films such as The Graduate (1968), The Godfather films (1972 and 1974), Nashville (1975) and Taxi Driver (1976) share key formal, visual, and thematic characteristics. This course will focus primarily on the use of music by New Hollywood directors such as Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, and Robert Altman in relation to film music and popular music traditions of the late 1960s and 1970s. The course will also consider how current directors such as Paul Thomas Anderson (Magnolia, There Will Be Blood) have been influenced in their use of music by the New Hollywood model. http://www.music.uiuc.edu/facultyBio.php?id=177 First Year Discovery Program Course.
