	32957	Lecture-Discussion	G	5:00PM -7:50PM	T	147 Armory	Flinn, M	Part of Term: 1 Date Range: 01/20/09-05/06/09 Section Info: Theories of Cinema Seminar on influential theories and accompanying debates about the textual/ extra-textual mechanisms and cultural/ political impact of cinema and related screen media. The course fulfills the theory requirement for the interdisciplinary Graduate Minor in Cinema Studies. This course will provide an advanced introduction to the substantial field of film theory. Attention will be given to canonical texts of classic and contemporary film theory. We will read the discipline�s founding texts (e.g. Munsterberg, Balazs, Eisenstein, Kracauer, Benjamin, Bazin) and as well as more contemporary theory (Baudry, Metz, Mulvey, Williams, Doane, Silverman, Deleuze, Ranci�re, Rodowick). A number of film screenings will be organized (approx. bi-weekly) in order to develop a common cinematic vocabulary for speaking about film theory. This course is meant to provide an introduction to the topic: prior knowledge of cinema or film theory is very helpful but not required. This course is one of two required courses for the Graduate Minor in Cinema Studies. FR/CWL 552 meets with CINE/CWL/ENG 504 Restriction(s): Restricted to Graduate - Urbana-Champaign.
