Colloquium in East Asian Languages and Cultures :Contemporary Korean Narratives in Films This course offers a broad cultural examination of Korean narratives in contemporary cinema and fiction. We start with some post-war period fictions and films and work our way to the very recent films of the "Korean wave" era, along with "New Women Writers" in the 21st century fictions. Our thematic focus will be gender, class, nation, memory, city, and global capitalism. At the heart of the work for the course will be attention to the permutations of cultural identities in their narratives, where we will try to account critically for shifts in style and form. Prerequisite: None. All readings are in English, and films are subtitled.
