Advanced study of issues and literature relevant to emerging new media. Discusses the intersection of art, technology, and society. Explores aesthetics, criticism, historical work, and current work in this area.

3 undergraduate hours. 4 graduate hours. May be repeated to a maximum of 6 undergraduate or 8 graduate hours. Prerequisite: ARTH 111, ARTH 112, and junior standing.

Topic: Issues in Contemporary Arts: This course investigates the relationship between art history, theory, and practice in the production, distribution, display, and critical reception of contemporary art. Using current exhibitions as a framework, the course covers a number of different mediums and movements and evaluates art works within their art historical and theoretical contexts. Class discussions encompass assigned readings and presentations of contemporary art works by well-known and emerging artists. Artists to be covered this semester include Louise Bourgeois, Marlene Dumas, Aernout Mik, and others. Gallery and museum visits to view contemporary art, including at least one full day in New York City, will aid in considering contemporary art in relation to curatorial practice and institutional paradigms. Instructor: Anne Ellegood. Enrollment is restricted to students accepted into the Illinois at the Phillips Collection program in Washington D.C. Course meets in Carriage House Studio, The Phillips Collection. Graduate Section.
