Topic: Introduction to Design Thinking. Design thinking is a term used to describe a human-centered approach to design and innovation. The process involves considering all aspects of the relationship between people and the products, services and experiences they will make use of, including functional, visual, tactile, social, contextual and emotional aspects. It involves using a variety of thinking processes deductive, speculative, abductive and integrative, with an emphasis on the use of observation, empathy, ideation and modelling to discover and address opportunities for design propositions, along with the communication of design outcomes by diagrammatic and narrative means. This course is aimed at developing the design thinking abilities of students from programs across the University, specifically those outside SA+D. The course will be an action-oriented introduction to the use of design thinking in different contexts, with plenty of opportunities to get down-and-dirty with design investigations. First Year Discovery Program Course. Registration restricted to freshmen. Students should enroll in only one Discovery course.
