First year Discovery Program Course. Registration restricted to Freshman. Students should enroll in only one Discovery course. Introduces the principles of biology, including microbiology, biochemistry, genetics, plant and animal systems, ecosystems, and examples of engineering applications to biology through lecture and laboratory exercises. Students will be encouraged to read and evaluate popular articles on contemporary biological engineering topics. At the end of the course, students will be able to convey matter and principles in general biology, cite examples of engineering applications to biology, and appreciate different sides of controversial biological issues, and have an awareness of the global impact of engineering decisions.
