Section Info:
This course is capped at 15 students. The course is intended for majors, who need no permission to enroll. All others, including minors, should contact the instructor for permission to enroll. TOPIC: TIME AND IDENTITY. The course will begin with an examination of some issues in the philosophy of time: whether time flows, the possibility of time travel, the possibility of time without change, and the nature of temporal facts. We will then examine some issues in identity: whether identity can be vague, whether objects can be identical to the material of which they are made, what it is for an object at one time to be identical to an object at an earlier time, and puzzles of personal identity. The overarching goal of the course will be to improve your philosophical writing. So rather than having several small assignments, there will be two papers and you will write multiple drafts over the course of the semester. The course will be capped at fifteen (15) students. The course is intended for majors, who need no permission to enroll. All others, including minors, should contact the instructor for permission to enroll. There is no textbook for this course; all readings will be available (for free!) on e-reserve.
