Section Info:
Evolution of Language Most of us think of language as just another cognitive skill that we learn through imitation and instruction. This course presents a very different view: Human language is a biological capacity. Evidence to be examined includes: Unlike other cognitive skills, humans must learn a first language during childhood or they can never learn it. Language processing depends on specialized neural circuitry. Variations in the Foxp-2 gene in humans selectively impairs language acquisition while leaving other cognitive skills intact. First year Discovery Program course. Registration restricted to freshman. Students should only enroll in one Discovery course.
