Human Reproductive Biology. First year Discovery Program Course. Registration restricted to freshmen. Students should enroll in only one Discovery Course. This course consists of lectures and discussions on topics in human reproduction where technological and clinical advances are having economic, social and ethical consequesnces. These consequences raise daunting challenges to health care, governement, social and religious institutions. Topics include prevalent reproductive health problems (sexually transmitted diseases and hormone-dependent cancer), assisted reproductive technologies, stem cells and cloning, environmental disrupters, contaception and global human population dynamics. The course includes readings, discussions, and group interactions. This class will meet in 354A Medical Sciences Building.

The Human Brain. First Year Discovery Program Course. Registration restricted to freshmen. Students should enroll in only one Discovery Course. Overview of brain structure and functional organization; sensory, motor and higher cognitive functions; sleep and language; learning and memory; sex and brain; functional imaging; synaptic chemistry and metabolism; drugs and brain function; brain and intelligence; abnormal brain development (Down's syndrome, mental retardation, cerebral palsy); normal and abnormal aging (Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease); neuronal regeneration; neural transplantation. Two hours of conventional lecture/discussion and one hour of audiovisual presentations per week. Readings from popular biological and biomedical science journals and authentic Internet websites. This class will meet in 501 Burrill Hall.
